The Story Of Pounamu

For generations, pounamu has been treasured for its strength, beauty and cultural significance. Found primarily on Te Tai Poutini, the West Coast of Te Waipounamu, it has been shaped into tools, weapons and precious taonga, carried and passed down through generations.Today, pounamu within the Ngāi Tahu takiwā is owned by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, recognising the enduring relationship between Ngāi Tahu and this treasured stone.

Taonga with Meaning

Te Matau

For the people of Ngāti Māhaki, the matau (fish hook) links to our marae named “Te Tauraka waka a Māui” (the landing place of Māui). Māui is renowned for fishing up the North Island of New Zealand (Te Ika a Māui) using a fish hook crafted from his grandmother’s jawbone

Te Koru

The koru is a spiral form regularly seen in nature and used in Māori art design, and represents growth.

Te Rau Kūmara

This twisted form is inspired by the leaves of the kūmara, a significant food source for Ngati Māhaki. The kūmara leaves and vines twist and combine with no beginning or end.

Te Manaia

The manaia is a being, a life form, in side profile. When wearing a manaia it can act as a guardian as it keeps a watchful eye on your surroundings.
