A taonga of Te Tai Poutini
The Story Of Pounamu
For generations, pounamu has been treasured for its strength, beauty and cultural significance. Found primarily on Te Tai Poutini, the West Coast of Te Waipounamu, it has been shaped into tools, weapons and precious taonga, carried and passed down through generations.Today, pounamu within the Ngāi Tahu takiwā is owned by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, recognising the enduring relationship between Ngāi Tahu and this treasured stone.
Shaped by nature and finished by hand, every piece of pounamu carries its own distinctive colour, markings and character. From delicate earrings to treasured statement pieces, each taonga is entirely unique.
