Frequently Asked Questions

Are all of your products authentic?

Yes. Every piece of pounamu sold by Westland Greenstone is genuine New Zealand pounamu and is accompanied by a Ngāi Tahu Certificate of Authenticity. Our Aotea and Tahutahi collections are also sourced from New Zealand.

What is Tahutahi pounamu?

Tahutahi is an exceptionally rare variety of New Zealand pounamu found only in South Westland. Its name translates to "snowflake", reflecting the distinctive white crystalline patterns found throughout the stone. Kāti Māhaki holds the exclusive rights to Tahutahi, making Westland Greenstone the only retail store in New Zealand offering authentic Tahutahi pounamu.

What is Aotea stone?

Aotea is one of New Zealand's rarest gemstones and is found only in a single river in South Westland. Its distinctive blend of blue, green and cream tones ensures every piece is naturally unique.

Will my piece look exactly like the photographs?

No. Every piece of pounamu, Tahutahi and Aotea is formed by nature, meaning variations in colour, pattern and texture are to be expected. These natural characteristics make every piece unique.

Are your carvings handmade?

Yes. Our jewellery, carvings and taonga are handcrafted by skilled artisans, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Do you offer custom commissions?

Yes. We welcome enquiries for bespoke jewellery, carvings and commissioned pieces. Please contact us to discuss your ideas.

Caring for Your Taonga

How should I care for my pounamu?

Clean your taonga using warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and store it separately from other jewellery to help prevent scratches.

Can I wear my pounamu every day?

Yes. Pounamu is a durable natural stone that is intended to be worn and treasured throughout your lifetime.

Cultural Questions

Can anyone wear pounamu?

Yes. Pounamu may be worn by anyone who does so with respect and appreciation for its cultural significance.

Do I have to receive pounamu as a gift?

While gifting pounamu is a cherished tradition for many people, there is no universal tikanga requiring pounamu to be gifted. Many people choose to purchase a piece themselves to mark a significant milestone or personal journey.
